please help! tattoo question?

okay so i got some words on my foot about a month ago and the guy advised me to have the font more on the big side than small because in the future the words can/will (not really combine) but sorta smudge into each other a bit. ANYWAY my question is if thats true then when someone gets a feather tattoo or a tree with a lot of branches, in a couple years will all the shading and close lines look sloppy or just unappealing? or does this only happen when you are much older and your skin has less elasticity?
